Financing biodiversity equitably: From gap to practice
Self-paced course

Financing biodiversity equitably: From gap to practice explores the critical role of biodiversity finance in addressing the global nature and climate crisis. With nearly one million species at risk of extinction and natural ecosystems under increasing pressure from deforestation, land degradation, pollution, and climate change, mobilizing effective finance has become an urgent global priority.

While the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework calls for at least USD 200 billion annually for biodiversity by 2030, a financing gap of USD 700-900 billion remains. The course emphasizes that successful biodiversity finance must go beyond funding alone by ensuring the meaningful participation of local communities, respecting human rights, upholding Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), and supporting equitable benefit-sharing.

Developed by Landscape Alliance's Global Landscapes Forum through the GLF-Luxembourg Finance for Nature platform, the course equips practitioners, investors, policymakers, and advocates with practical knowledge of emerging finance instruments, key trends, and real-world case studies. It highlights nature-positive finance approaches that combine environmental impact, social inclusion, and sustainable economic development.

Learning outcomes

  • Explain the scale of the global biodiversity crisis, the international policy frameworks that define our collective response, and the magnitude and composition of the biodiversity finance gap, including the role of harmful financial flows and environmentally harmful subsidies.

  • Understand some key mechanisms of biodiversity finance such as blended finance, payment for ecosystem services, and biodiversity conservation funds, and evaluate how they are designed and governed in practice through real-world case studies.

  • Understand the role of environmental and social standards in ensuring that biodiversity finance protects community rights and delivers equitable benefits.

  • Identify concrete actions for practitioners, investors and policymakers for closing the biodiversity finance gap and advancing high-integrity, inclusive biodiversity finance.

Target audience

This course is for GLF-Luxembourg Finance for Nature Platform members and investors, climate and biodiversity finance actors and financial service providers, as well as development practitioners, policymakers, advocates, Indigenous organizations, civil society and local community networks working on or interested in biodiversity finance.
